Con Safo translates from Spanish as “with respect.” In South Texas the phrase also means, “don’t mess with me/this/us,” and appeared in the 1960s as graffiti: C/S.

Susie is an artist and teacher whose work is inspired by the colors, textures and images of the rich landscape — physical, historical and cultural — near the Texas Mexican border. She infuses her work with symbolic text. “Working in fabric and working with these sacred images of women, words and pattern binds me to generations of other women, literally and figuratively. These are the connections I honor and celebrate in both content and form.”

This is the third of her text-inspired work for Dinner@8 exhibits, each building on the previous iconography.
